The Thai Bangkaew Dog is a generally healthy breed. Eye conditions, liver problems and susceptibility to ear infections have been reported in some lines.
The following heath tests are strongly recommended in addition to regular vet care:
- Radiographs of hips and elbows to screen for Canine Hip Dysplasia and Canine Elbow Dysplasia
- Patella (knees) evaluation to screen for Luxating Patella
- Cardiac evaluation to screen for heart conditions
- Examination by a Board Certified Veterinary Ophthalmologist to screen for eye conditions such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA)
Please note that all Thai Bangkaew Dogs should be screened for eye conditions by receiving an exam from a Board Certified Veterinary Ophthalmologist. Genetic markers for inherited eye diseases in the Thai Bangkaew Dog are poorly understood and require additional research. There are documented cases of dogs with clear Embark genetic test results having eye conditions.
Responsible breeders in the USA use organizations such as PennHIP, the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) and Embark to screen their breeding dogs.
